Boudhanath — The All-Seeing Eyes of Nepal

Seen from the sky, Boudhanath is a perfect mandala in the heart of Kathmandu. The ancient stupa's watchful eyes gaze across the valley in eternal peace.

From the air, Boudhanath looks like a perfect geometric mandala placed in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley. The great stupa — one of the largest in the world — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.

The stupa is 36 meters tall and surrounded by a circular plaza filled with prayer wheels, butter lamps, and the constant murmur of Om Mani Padme Hum. The iconic painted eyes on the tower look outward in all four directions — the all-seeing eyes of the Buddha.

Early morning at Boudhanath is magical. Monks in maroon robes circumambulate the stupa clockwise, spinning prayer wheels as they walk. The air smells of incense and butter lamps. Tibetan music drifts from the surrounding monasteries.

Our Nepal Yatra Trip always includes an evening visit to Boudhanath, when the stupa is lit up and the atmosphere is most vibrant. The restaurants and cafes around the plaza are perfect for a quiet dinner with a view of the illuminated dome.

"Experience this destination on our Nepal Yatra Trip — 6N/7D starting ₹17,500 from Raxaul, Bihar."
